When people think about surfing in Portugal, they usually think about big waves like in Nazare and professional surfers ripping in WSL competitions, like in Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal. But surfing in Portugal is more than that and, depending on the season, definitely a great place to learn how to surf.
The Algarve is a popular holiday destination for couples and families, famous for its beautiful beaches, cliffs and warm climate. But that’s not all. You were wondering: “Can I surf in the Algarve?” We have great news for you! You absolutely can! Just head towards the western Algarve, and you'll discover another side of the region and some of Portugal's best surf spots for first-timers, beginners, experienced and intermediate surfers. The Algarve has beaches and conditions for different levels of surfers throughout the year.
If you're staying in Lagos and wondering where to surf in Lagos, Portugal, you already have several options close by, including Meia Praia and Porto de Mós. Further west, around Sagres, Castelejo, Cordoama and Ponta Ruiva you’ll find even more options.
Where is the best surf spot in the Algarve?
As in many cases: it depends. The best surf spot in the Algarve depends on your level, the swell, wind, tide and conditions on the day, but you have an entire coastline to choose from, and if you are staying with TSE, our surf instructors will make sure to bring you to the best surf spot of the day.
Meia Praia
Best for: First timers, beginners and progressing surfers
Just outside Lagos, Meia Praia is one of the longest sandy beaches in the area. Its wide open beach and proximity to Lagos and our Surf Mansion make it a convenient place to surf, especially for beginners and surfers who are still building their confidence in the water. The beach can offer different peaks along its long shoreline, giving surf instructors some flexibility when choosing the best section for the conditions.

Porto de Mós
Best for: Beginners and progressing surfers
Porto de Mós is a beautiful sandy beach surrounded by cliffs. Its location can offer more shelter than some of the exposed west-coast beaches, making it an interesting option when conditions are suitable. For anyone staying in Lagos, it is also one of the most convenient beaches to reach for a surf session. Like all surf spots in the Algarve, conditions can change considerably depending on swell, wind and tide.

Castelejo
Best for: Intermediate and experienced surfers (Guests who have booked our beach taxi experience)
Further west, the landscape becomes wilder. Praia do Castelejo sits within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park and is surrounded by breathtaking landscape.
It is an exposed Atlantic beach, so the waves can be considerably stronger than at some of the more sheltered beaches closer to Lagos. Castelejo is also connected to neighbouring Cordoama at low tide, creating a stretch of coastline. Portugal's tourism authority describes the waves in this area as strong and well suited to surfing and bodyboarding.

Cordoama
Best for: Intermediate and experienced surfers
Just north of Castelejo, Praia da Cordoama is one of the most impressive surf beaches on the Algarve's west coast. The huge sandy beach is exposed to the Atlantic and is known for strong, regular waves. At low tide, Cordoama connects with Castelejo and Barriga, creating an impressive stretch of golden sand.
When the swell is right, Cordoama can offer excellent surf, but larger Atlantic swells can also make the beach challenging. This is a spot where understanding the conditions is particularly important. But don’t worry, all of our surf lessons include a spot introduction. Your surf instructor will explain the spot, its hazards, and the conditions.

Ponta Ruiva
Best for: Experienced surfers
Ponta Ruiva is one of the more remote and rugged surf spots along the Algarve's west coast. Located south of Castelejo, it has an exposed position and a wild, natural setting.
Conditions here depend heavily on the combination of swell, wind and tide, so local knowledge is particularly valuable. It is a spot where the ocean should be approached with respect rather than simply following a generic surf forecast.

Praia do Amado
Best for: Beginners to experienced surfers, depending on conditions
Further north, Praia do Amado near Carrapateira is one of the Algarve's best-known surf beaches. Its wide sandy beach and consistent Atlantic swell have made it a popular destination for surfers and surf schools for decades.
Amado has also hosted national and international surfing competitions and is recognised by Portugal's tourism authority as one of the region's important surf beaches.

Bordeira
Best for: Intermediate to experienced surfers
Just north of Amado, Praia da Bordeira is a huge and wild beach surrounded by dunes and open coastal landscape.
The beach becomes particularly spacious at low tide and is popular with surfers and bodyboarders. It can become powerful when the swell increases, but on smaller days there can be plenty of space to find a suitable peak.

Tonel
Best for: Beginners to intermediate surfers, depending on conditions
Located beside Sagres, Praia do Tonel sits on the south-facing side of the Algarve's western tip, close to our co-working space Off The Hook. Tonel is one of the recognised surf spots around Sagres and can be a useful option when conditions on the west coast are less favourable.

Beliche
Best for: Intermediate surfers
Praia do Beliche is tucked between high cliffs just west of Sagres. The cliffs provide shelter from some of the wind, while the beach can still receive good Atlantic swell. It is a popular spot for surfers and bodyboarders and has also hosted competitions. Its cliffs and changing ocean conditions mean that care is needed both in and out of the water.

Surfing in the Algarve
With so many beaches along a relatively short stretch of coastline, one of the biggest advantages of surfing in the Algarve is having options. A beach that works beautifully one day might be too exposed the next. Wind, swell direction, tide and changing sandbanks can all affect the quality and safety of a surf session. That's why the best surf spot in the Algarve isn't necessarily the most famous one. It is the beach with the right conditions for your level on that particular day.
Our surf school at TSE, plans surf sessions around the conditions and the level of the group rather than simply taking everyone to the same beach.
Unlike in many surfing destinations, surf guiding in Portugal is regulated, and organisations providing sports training have to meet requirements including registration, insurance, suitable facilities and appropriately qualified technical staff. Depending on the beach and municipality, there can also be specific rules and permissions governing where surf schools can operate. This means that a beach being popular for surfing does not automatically mean that every surf school is authorised to run lessons there.
From the accessible beaches around Lagos to the wild Atlantic coastline near Sagres and Carrapateira, the Algarve offers a huge variety of surf experiences.
For beginners, Meia Praia and Porto de Mós can offer great options when conditions are suitable. As you progress, Castelejo, Cordoama and Ponta Ruiva provide opportunities to experience the more exposed west coast. And if you're exploring further afield, Amado, Bordeira, Tonel and Beliche are all worth knowing.
